I think the answer is to create a Login menu item. Then, select the Options tab for the menu item and set the "Choose Login Redirect Type" to Internal; then define the URL (another menu item) for the different page (a "Registered User Home Page, if you would like to describe it that way) that the user will be redirected to when they login. It's worth a try.
